Covid-19 completely changed the world we once knew. For graduates coming out into this already competitive jobs market, are being asked to think ‘… about their own story.’ Graduates, we know that right now this situation is far from ideal so here at BSS Building Staff Solutions, we want to help you secure employment and get that all important first step on the employment ladder. Our recruiters are constantly looking for the most outstanding talent for jobs all over Ireland and the U.K.

A survey conducted by Irish Jobs (www.irishjobs.ie) , showed that despite a reduction of overall graduate positions available to 56% of previous levels, the graduate employment rate in July 2020 in Construction, Architecture and Property, was up 15% in comparison to July 2019. This is encouraging and despite the most recent restrictions on construction related activity, we are certain that the industry will bounce back.

With a multitude of positions coming up at BSS, I spoke to recruiter Ciaran McDermott and asked him how to stand out from the crowd:

Hi Ciaran! Introduce yourself, and what you do here at BSS.

I’m a member of the Professional Technical division within BSS, assisting a range of premium clients across Ireland & UK within the construction sector, ranging from Tier One contractors to specialist sub-contractors. My focus within BSS is assisting our clients with the placements of exceptional Quantity Surveyors, Estimators, Procurement Personnel & Construction Accounts Assistants

What are the attributes you look for in a construction graduate?

Someone who has a placement with an Irish contractor during their college course, or if not, willing to give a reference from part-time work in their home town/city. These indicators go a long way with hiring Directors/Commercial Management.

What’s the most important thing a graduate should consider when entering the workplace?

A candidate that is willing to learn – entering a workplace on the first step of your career may come as a shock to some. You will be presented with a new strategy of deadlines and assignments different from your college days, but try and make the most of the experience of your new colleagues around you, it’ll go a long way for development and integration.

Why should a graduate get in touch with BSS?

Unlike most recruitment firms in Ireland, we specialise in construction related placements. BSS has an outstanding working relationship with the top construction contractors and has a huge presence in every county in Ireland for our line of business.

What construction projects are you looking forward to seeing completed in the near future?

CGDM Construction Ireland Ltd. have just started site commencement of a residential development of 30 new apartments with extensive groundworks in Chapelizod, Dublin.

There are many projects from other contractors in this area that are popping up in this area and it’s great to see this Dublin suburb thriving – a hidden gem just on the River Liffey… I used to live there so I have a soft spot for the area!

Thank you to Ciaran for the interview.
