- Construction on Mayo and Greenway road upgrade due to commence in the summer (Source: Mayo Live)
Mayo County Council officials have confirmed that work on the redevelopment of the N59 outside Newport will commence in the summer. The upgrade of 5km of the N59 from Newport to Derrada was suspended last summer after Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) requested the Mayo regional design office suspend the tendering process due to a ‘funding issue’. The TII allocated €5.5m last February for the redevelopment of the road and the original time frame was for the tender to be awarded in July with work due to begin later in September. There were fears last year that the project would not go ahead after it was suspended and no new start date had been given for the project to commence.

Carlow County Council is close to a decision for a planning appliction for the construction of 14 new homes to be built in a development in County Carlow. The planning permission is sought by Dunneace Construction Limited and was received by Carlow County Council on the 24th of June 2024. The decision is set to be made by the Carlow County Council on the 3rd February 2025.
3. New home construction in Ireland drops 6.7% to 30,000 in 2024 (Source: Economic Times)
The number of homes built in Ireland build in last year fell 6.7% to 30,330 in a blow to the recently re-elected government that had hoped for more building to combat an acute housing shortage and to get on track to a target of 50,000 new homes each year to 2030. Ireland has struggled to house a rapidly growing population since the construction industry melted down in the wake of a 2009 crash, with house prices surging almost 160% from a 2013 trough and rents roughly doubling in parts of the country.
